    Description

    1991 Volkswagen “Double Cab” Transporter (DOKA)

    I have owned this rare VW utility pickup for approximately a decade, during which time it has been primarily used on weekends to haul construction materials, kayaks, camping gear, firewood, and gardening supplies. Manufactured in Germany, this model was never directly exported to the USA, and this particular truck spent its initial 16 years in western Canada, before being imported to Atlanta around 2007. I am the third owner and purchased the truck in late 2011. It is equipped with its original 2.1 liter 90 HP flat-4  "wasserboxer” engine and 4-speed manual transmission. It is capable of 70 MPH, but operates most comfortably below 55 MPH and can easily carry a ½ ton. It has proven to be extremely reliable, and a joy to own. I am selling it due to recent health issues, which preclude me from its continued use.
    While in my possession, I performed the following modifications:
    1. Replaced the defunct and NLA Bosch “Digifant” ECM and fuel injection system with a modern
    “GoWesty Engine Management System”, comprised of a new GM based ECM with OBD-II diagnostics, utilizing sequential-
    fire injection instead of batch-fire injection
    , new billet aluminum throttle body with modern TPS
    , modern modern manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, new oxygen sensor, new knock sensor and controller, modern distributor-less ignition system, n
    ew electronic coil-on-plug ignition coils, cam position unit and crank position wheel, m
    odern Mass Air Flow sensor, and
    wiring harness with
    completely sealed connectors) all of which provide improved operating efficiency and reliability.
    2.
    Installed a “Small Car Performance” / “Vintage Air” in dash (Gen IV) air conditioning and heater system, including:
    new parallel flow condenser, evaporator, upgraded
    450W engine cooling fan and fan shroud, new dryer, “Sanden” compressor, hoses and fittings.
    3. Replaced the original manual steering rack with a power steering system, using both rebuilt OEM and new parts, including: power rack and pinion, pump, hoses, fluid container and filter.
    4. Completely rebuilt the suspension, using “Schwenk” “Carat” lowering springs,“Koni” classic shock absorbers, “Powerflex” polyurethane bushings, “Burley Motorsports” upper control arms, “Lemforder” ball joints, “T3 Technique” anti-sway bar and end-links.
    5. Improved engine cooling with a new ”Behr” radiator, “GoWesty” stainless steel coolant pipes, “VanCafe” silicone hoses, and “Auto Cool Guy” (NB-50) radiator fan controller.
    6.
    Improved braking with “Small Car Performance” front big brake kit (VW/Audi G60 dual calipers, vented rotors, and stainless hoses) and “GoWesty” rear disc brakes (using circa 1995 VW “Eurovan” components).
    7. Improved driver comfort with “Dynamat Extreme” interior soundproofing and “Reflectix” thermal insulation.
    8. Installed two grey leather covered “Recaro” front seats, an original South African leather steering wheel, “RS Fab - Big Shot” shifter, “Tuffy Security Products” center console, “Classic Auto Sound” radio, “Rear View Safety” backup camera, ”OBD-II Scan Gauge” and “Speedhut“ oil pressure & oil temperature gauges.
    9. Replaced the original VW 14” steel wheels and 185R bias ply tires, with circa 2001-2004 Mercedes CLK E320 16” alloy wheels, and “Michelin Premier A/S” 215-60 R16 radial tires.
    10.
    Improved exterior lighting by replacing the original VW low lumen output square headlights, with a “4-round South African Grill”, utilizing
    “Hella Vision Plus” low beam headlamps with separate
    H3 high beam lamps, and high amperage electric relays.
    A
    ll remaining exterior lighting was replaced with LED bulbs.
    11. Replaced the gas tank, fuel level sender, fuel pump, fuel filter, and all fuel lines.
    12. Exterior additions include: “Rocky Mountain Westy” front and rear (“Twin Peaks”) bumpers, “GoWesty” front skid plate, and “TerraWagen” fender flares.
    13. Additional miscellaneous engine components include: “Empi” aluminum valve covers, “GoWesty” stainless steel muffler-catalytic converter- and exhaust, “Mocal” sandwich plate and auxiliary “Setrab”oil cooler, “Vanistan” stainless steel pushrod tube shields, “Bosch” 4-hole fuel injectors, “GoWesty” gear reduction starter.
    14. It has two “Optima” Blue Top Marine batteries (Engine& Auxiliary), which are controlled by a “Blue Sea Systems”  “Add-A-Battery” Dual Circuit System (including a battery switch and automatic charging relay) ,along with a “ProMariner” (“Pro Sport 12”) dual battery charger, all of which have all been relocated to the middle storage compartment (“Treasure Chest”). The auxiliary battery has its own separate fuse box, capable of powering an air compressor, winch, 120 v power inverter, refrigerator, exterior lights, audio equipment, etc.
    15.
    A full sized Michelin spare tire and Mercedes CLK wheel are also stored in the middle compartment and are accessible through a hatch in the rear passenger compartment.
    16. Routine maintenance items include:
    The front and rear wheel hubs have been disassembled, cleaned and lubricated with “Redline CV-2” grease
    Engine oil has been replaced approximately every 3000 miles with “Mobile 1” 15/50 full synthetic oil.
    Transmission gear oil has been replaced x1 with “Redline 75/90”
    Coolant has been replaced x3 with “Prestone 50/50”.
    Brake fluid has been replaced x3 with “Pentosin ”Super Dot 4.
    The AC system is filled with “RedTek” R-12 refrigerant.

    7. Disclosures:
    Because of the sequential-fire injection, the engine must be cranked
    momentarily longer
    , before it starts. However the new after market injection system results in less pollution, smoother running and improved fuel economy in comparison to the original Bosch batch-injection system. In my experience, the engine has never failed to start and one quickly adjust to the marginally longer cranking time.
    There is an intermittent “click” in one of the driver’s side CV joints, which doesn’t interfere with vehicle operation. I replaced all four original CV joints in 04/2021 with new “GNK/Lobro” (German)CV’s and “Rockford” (USA) boots, using “Redline CV-2” grease, and suspect the position of one of the CV boots needs to be adjusted to center the axle. However, I’m no longer physically unable to fix the problem and will leave it to the next owner. However, I am providing another new replacement CV and Boot, just in case.
    There is a small shopping cart ding on the rear hatch. (See photo.)
    The van is presently located, titled, and registered in Charleston, South Carolina.
    I am the sole owner of the vehicle and
    there are no lien holders
    . (Note: I originally financed the vehicle with J. J. Best Banc, but paid off the note in 2012. My original 2011 title showed an outstanding lien, but recently obtained a new SC Title showing that the previous lien has been satisfied.
    The pictures displayed on Ebay were all taken within the last two weeks.
    The mileage is actual.
    I do not possess a middle seat or a canopy (tilt)
    .
    There is no cruise control.
    The paint is approximately 95% original, with only some minor spot touch ups. (See:
    “Paintscatch.com”- 1991 VWVanagon-Medium Blue, as recommended by “GoWesty”.)
    The wall panels in the rear compartment are painted with grey “Behr”, “Low Luster Enamel”, “Porch and Patio, Floor Paint”, from “Home Depot”.
    Windows and large side mirrors are all manually operated.
    The van is sold “As is, Where is”, with no warrantees, expressed or implied. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. However, I'm happy to assist with loading.

    As I understand the situation, the “GoWesty” Fuel Injection /Engine Management System is currently approved by the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B) for use in California. (The C.A.R.B approval # - executive order is located on a sticker adjacent to the engine air filter).
    However, I am uncertain whether the catalytic converter currently installed on this vehicle is similarly approved.
    It may be necessary to replace the existing 48-state converter with an approved high capacity model, before the truck can be registered in either California or Colorado.
    That’s all I can remember.
